Breeding Guide - Part I - The Basics of Breeding

Introduction

Back in the days of the first generation Pokemon Games (Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow), everyone wondered 'how do pokemon reproduce?' Back then, breeding was not possible - pokemon could only be caught. Then, when the second generation came out (Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal), the question was answered - pokemon lay eggs!

To breed, you must leave 2 compatible pokemon together in the daycare. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, the Daycare Center can be found in Solaceon Town.

Getting an egg

Not all pokemon can breed with eachother. Some pokemon cannot breed at all. In order to breed, the pokemon must both belong to the same egg group and one pokemon must be male and the other one must be female. Or if one of the parents is Ditto, they can be of any gender (they may even have no gender, for example, Beldum, Magnemite and Porygon).

Whether or not an egg is produced is determined after every 256 steps. When the pokemon are in the daycare, it is possible to check what the chances are of getting an egg. Simply talk to the old man outside and he will tell you one of four things:

1 - "They seem to get along very well" - For each 256 steps, there's a 70% chance of getting an egg.

2 - "They seem to get along" - For each 256 steps, there's a 50% chance of getting an egg.

3 - "They don't seem to like each other" - For each 256 steps, there's a 20% chance of getting an egg.

4 - "They prefer to play with other Pokemon than each other" - The pokemon in the daycare are incompatible and cannot breed. Therefore, there's a 0% chance of getting an egg.

How do I see that an egg has been produced?
There are a couple of ways that you can find out whether or not your pokemon in the Daycare Center have produced an egg or not:-

Firstly, you can open up/refresh your Day-Care Checker Poketch Application (App number 9, received from the guy inside the Daycare Center). To refresh the application, tap the touch screen.



Secondly, you can check the direction that the Daycare man is facing to determine whether or not you have an egg waiting for you or not. To refresh the Daycare man's facing direction, go into a building or out of Solaceon Town itself.

One you have retrieved your egg(s), you must then hatch it. Different pokemon hatch at different rates. Magikarp hatches the quickest, whereas rare pokemon such as Beldum, Larvitar and Bagon take the longest. If you need to know an approximate number of steps that a certain pokemon takes to hatch, post below and I'll find out for you. When hatching eggs, don't forget your Magma Armor/Flame Body pokemon! If you have a pokemon with one of these abilities in your party, the number of steps that it takes to hatch an egg is halved!

Egg Groups: Notes

Pokemon in the 'No Eggs' group CANNOT breed at all (not even with a Ditto)!

Any pokemon not in the 'No Eggs' group can breed with Ditto.

Some pokemon appear in more than one Egg Group. This means that they can breed with any pokemon in either of their Egg Groups - this is useful for Chain Breeding Egg Moves between Egg Groups (Chain Breeding will be discussed later in Part II).

When breeding certain pokemon, they do not produce an egg which hatches into the lowest evolutionary form. This is because certain incenses need to be held by either of the parent pokemon. A list of all incense pokemon can be found below:




Natures

When an egg is produced, the nature is chosen at random. However, if the mother is holding an Everstone, there is a 50% chance that the baby will have the same nature. When breeding with a Ditto, the Ditto will act as the mother - a Ditto holding an everstone has a 50% chance of passing its nature on to the baby pokemon. Abilities

If the pokemon has two possible abilities, then the baby pokemon will randomly have one of them. The parent pokemons' abilities have no effect on the baby pokemon's ability. If a pokemon has only one possible ability, the baby pokemon will have that one ability.

Water 2 are fish-like pokemon, which you'd expect to get by fishing and Water 3 contains the crab-like and jellyfish-like pokemon that you'd expect to find on/near the beach. The Water 1 Egg Group contains the pokemon you'd expect to find deep in the sea, and those which can live outside the water.

In Diamond and Pearl, Ditto can be found on Route 218 by using the Pokeradar. In platinum, you find them in the Trophy Garden as the daily pokemon. But they are quite rare so it may take you a while to find one. In Diamond/Pearl, their encounter rate is 12%, in Platinum, its only 5%.
